Search Engines do a good job identifying what the overall content of a web page is about. But you may have parts of your web page that contains specific type of content like product reviews, embedded videos or even a food recipe. Search Engines can stand to benefit from a little help in understanding the semantic focus of this type of content.

Unfortunately we can give them some assistance, one universal code format that would help us do this is the microformats. Microformats gives us a special syntax to use to help search engines identify very specific type of content on your pages. This not only help the search engines identify this pieces of content, it also helps identify the very specific attributes of your content.

Here is some examples of a Recipe Text

We can look at the above quickly and identify it as a food recipe. But for a search engines the short sentences and many line breaks are a bit awkward and they can possibly understand what each line really means. By augmenting the code behind those recipe texts using the micro-format for recipes.

You have the opportunities to explicitly tell the search engines exactly what this content is. You can see there’s properties for ingredients, preps and cook time and just about anything else you can think of for a recipe. If you think about it from the search engine prospective knowing not just this is just definitely a food recipe, but also knowing all those Meta-Data around the recipe will help it return this content to users that are look for it.

If someone is search for a particular shelves recipe or abundance of apples and need some things to do with them. The Search engine would have a much deeper semantic understanding of what this content truly is, and they can return it on the search results for an array of relevance search quarries. Head over to and browse for various types of content that have micro-format.

Recipes are just one of many, you can also use Microformats to describe a book such as author, publishing dates and number of pages or you can use micro-formats to define an upcoming event by its name, location and even pricing. If you have a break in other business or you are doing an E-commerce sales, make sure you are using micro-format for your local business content or your product content.

As a general rule, anytime you can specifically identify content for search engines you probably you should.
